Four J’cans face illegal landing charges after ganja bust in Cayman
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Four Jamaicans have been charged with illegal landing in the Cayman Island, with one of them facing an additional charge of drug smuggling, following the seizure of two boats and more than 700 pounds of ganja.
A Cayman resident was also arrested during the bust.
According to Cayman reports, the contraband was seized after one of the boats was tracked to the West Bay shoreline, where it was abandoned.
Yoandy Ebanks, 36, from West Bay, Cayman and 39-year-old Jamaican Terry Wright were arrested shortly after and later charged with the importation of ganja.
Ebanks also faces human smuggling charges, while Wright is also charged with illegal landing.
The two appeared in court yesterday and were remanded in custody as they awaited the preparation of legal papers.
Meanwhile, the three other Jamaicans were on the second boat and initially escaped police but were arrested a day later by customs officers in Cayman Brac.
“Oshane Nickoy Ricketts, Andre Washington Robinson, and Nicholas Odell Maxam, have now been charged with illegal landing, with Robinson also charged with possession of ganja,” stated Cayman reports.
Although the Crown claims the two boats are connected, the Jamaican men in the second boat have not been charged with the massive ganja find, the report added.
The defence lawyer of the three men, who made brief appearances in court, said they were not linked to the drug haul and they were forced to land on the Brac because of poor weather.
The men were remanded in custody as the Crown continues with the case.
