Marlie Mount are INSPORTS netball champions
MARLIE Mount Primary and Infant School defeated Portland Cottage Primary 17-12 at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday to capture the 2018 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) All-Island National Primary Schools netball title.
The St Catherine-based Marlie Mount aggregation wrapped up a double success as they had previously won the St Catherine parish competition.
The first quarter of Tuesday’s final was evenly contested with Portland Cottage netting the first goal after some close calls in the shooting circles at either end. Marlie Mount, after scoring their first goal, added another three straight goals before conceding another to lead 4-2 at the break.
Marlie Mount took control of the second quarter with some good centre-court passes that allowed their shooters to score an additional four goals to Portland Cottage’ two goals for a 8-4 lead at half-time.
The shooting duo of Calissa Cobourne and Trishauna Allen pushed Marlie Mount further into the lead in the third quarter by scoring seven goals to Portland Cottage’s three goals for a 15-7 lead going into the final quarter.
Portland Cottage fought back strongly in the final quarter with their shooters. Nikesha Powell, especially, tried hard to close the lead. However, it was too late for the Clarendon-based team which, despite outscoring their opponents 5-2 in that quarter, went down by five goals.
Meanwhile, Naggo Head Primary defeated Burnt Savannah from Manchester 18-8 in the third-place play-off.
Portsmouth Primary captured the Rally competition by beating Ensom City Primary in the final, while Burnt Savannah took the award for most disciplined team.
In the individual awards, Trishauna Allen of Marlie Mount was named most valuable player, whiler her teammate Janet Wallace received the best defender award.
