Henry to close debate on new Road Traffic Bill today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Transport and Mining Minister, Lester ‘Mike’ Henry will close the debate on the New Road Traffic Bill 2016 when the Parliament convenes this afternoon.
The Bill, which was tabled on September 9, 2016, has 101 amendments and has received wide bipartisan support from its inception.
It will replace the current Road Traffic Act of 1938, sections of which have become obsolete given the technological advancement in motor vehicle and road designs.
According to Henry, Parliamentarians on both side of the political fence are eager to see the Bill passed into Law, as it will go a long way to help arrest the carnage on the Jamaican roads, as well as, the indiscipline shown by some motorists, who disregard the Road Code.
Among the provisions in the new Bill is the authority that will be given to Island Traffic Authority to revoke driver’s licenses.
Under the old Road Traffic Act, the revocation of a driver’s license was a court decision.
The transport ministry said it is now putting the final touches to a massive island-wide Public Education Campaign that will accompany the New Road Traffic Act.
The police are also expected to enforce the provisions of the new Act without favour and with due regards to the rights of motorists.
