2017/18 SUPER BOWL LII REVIEW – Eagles soar to unpredictable win over Patriots

Sunday, February 4th 2018, the day of Super Bowl LII, will go down in infamy as fantastic in the annals of Super Bowl history.

The event was record-setting in many ways, but none more so than the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles (the proverbial David) defeated the ominous dynasty of the Belichick-Brady New England Patriots (the proverbial Goliath) to take their first hold on the coveted Lombardi Trophy with a 33-41 victory.

JustBet initially offered the Eagles at $25.00 as a longshot to win the Super Bowl, but they advanced to lead the NFC with a 13-3 record in the regular season. However, due to the injury to starting QB Carson Wentz, they were relegated to underdogs throughout the post season and seemed to relish that position. It probably relieved some of the pressure on them to perform since very little was expected.

On Sunday the execution by Philadelphia was far from perfect, but they were far more consistent and made critical plays far more frequently than the Patriots. The eventual Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles had a shaky start, but gradually grew in confidence and, with aggressive play calling by Head Coach Doug Pederson, had a game worthy of the award.

By no means was the offence of the Patriots pedestrian, as their 33 points would have been more than enough to win in any other Super Bowl. Teams that had scored 33 points in previous Super Bowls were 19-0 before last Sunday.

The Eagles, however, were on a mission and wouldn’t be denied. The game deservingly came down to the last tick of the clock with an attempted ‘Hail Mary’ by New England’s QB that landed harmlessly in the Eagles’ end zone. In the end, the Eagles pulled off one of the NFL’s most difficult feats: protecting a lead against Brady, who has 54 career fourth-quarter comebacks.

The NFC and AFC’s top seeds treated NFL fans to an awesome display of offensive football. The shoot-out that ensued shocked the experts as, for the most part, the defensive units for both teams (particularly the Patriots) seemed to have ended their season one day too early. Were it not for a strip sack on Tom Brady late in the fourth quarter (that arguably sealed the Eagles’ victory), the game would have ended sack-free and would have lacked any deserving defensive highlight.

However, not even the best passing performance in Super Bowl history by Brady was enough to force a record-setting Patriots’ victory.

Notwithstanding, Super Bowl LII rewrote the record book with at least 32 record-setting or record-tying performances. Of those records, eight of them were personally tied or broken by Tom Brady. Brady’s 505-yard passing performance broke a record that he had set in last year’s Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons. In the Patriots’ 34-28 win over Atlanta, Brady threw for 467 yards. Brady also extended many of his career records: In eight Super Bowl games, Brady has racked up more career passing attempts (357), completions (235) and passing yards (2,576) than any other player in Super Bowl history. Brady also has more Super Bowl passing touchdowns (18) than any other player in NFL history.

The two teams set the Super Bowl record for most combined total yards (1,151) and most combined passing yards (874). The 1,151-yard total actually represents the most yards in any NFL game, including the regular season and play-offs.

The offensive output relegated both punters, Ryan Allen and Donnie Jones, to ‘bench-warmers’ for most of the game. The one combined punt by both teams set a Super Bowl record and the Patriots also set another record by becoming the first team not to punt the ball a single time in the Super Bowl. The two teams also set a unique record that might not ever get broken — most failed extra points. The Eagles and Patriots failed on a total of four PAT conversions in the game, with each kicker missing one extra point and each team missing one two-point conversion.

We now await the start of a new season, but for the time being, here is a list of all the records that were broken or equalled on Sunday.
