Patrons at 100, the sports bar and casino on Hope Road in St Andrew, watch this lion dance being performed Monday night as part of celebrations to mark the start of the Chinese New Year, which officially falls on February 16 this year. The Chinese Benevolent Association is this year reviving the tradition of conducting lion dances in front of various establishments. In Chinese tradition, the lion dances in front of or inside an establishment, eats some symbolic food (lettuce), bestows blessings and good luck on it, and accepts a token donation in a red envelope. The next lion dances will be conducted on Friday starting at midday through to 3:00 pm, first in front of Scotiabank on Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston at; then at Liguanea Drug and Garden Centre, Liguanea Plaza; before moving to General Foods Supermarket in the same plaza. On Saturday, the lion dance will be conducted in the downtown Kingston shopping district in the vicinity of Barry, Princess and Orange streets from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. (Photo: Joseph Wellington)
