‘Jack Ruby’ may get his way
ST James Avenue in Ocho Rios, St Ann may be renamed after late music producer and sound system operator Lawrence “Jack Ruby” Lindo, whose work is synonymous with the parish.
The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) council meeting noted the resolution moved and approved by the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) at a council meeting in January.
It was moved by SAMC Mayor Michael Belnavis, who noted the significant role and impact of Jack Ruby and James Avenue (Music Avenue) on Ocho Rios and the island’s cultural heritage.
According to the resolution, numerous requests from the public for James Avenue to be renamed in honour of the producer led to the council conducting a “ground truthing from property owners along the roadway with regards to the request to rename James Avenue”.
The resolution will be sent to the Ministry of Local Government for approval.
Born in Kingston, Lindo operated the Jack Ruby Hi Fi sound system in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, before moving to Ocho Rios in the early 1970s. He died in 1989.
He produced Burning Spear’s seminal Marcus Garvey album, released in 1976. The set was responsible for the roots reggae singer gaining international recognition.
Other artistes Lindo produced include Justin Hinds ( Just in Time/ Jezebel), The Gaylads, The Heptones and Big Youth.
Lawrence “Jack Ruby” Lindo played himself in the 1978 movie Rockers. He is the grandfather of pop singer Sean Kingston.
