Faulkland, Reggae Youths in key Super League fixture
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Newly crowned mid-season champions Faulkland FC and Reggae Youths, the team they beat, will meet at Jarrett Park this afternoon as the third round of the Jamaica Football Federation/ Western Confederation/ Charley’s JB Rum Super League gets underway with five games.
The third round will be played on a cross-zone format where teams will face each other once and the top-four on total points at the end of the round will qualify for the semi-finals.
No points were awarded for Sunday’s final that was won 2-0 by Faulkland FC and both teams are tied on 23 points and will meet in a top-of-the-table clash.
Faulkland FC, who will go into today’s game as favourites after Sunday’s dominant display, also lead on a far superior goal difference.
Also today, third-placed Wadadah FC and Montego Bay Boys Club will meet at the UDC field in a clash of two teams that lost in the semi-finals last season.
In other encounters, Beaches Negril will face Roaring River at Little London, Hopewell United and Grand Palladium will meet at Rusea’s High, and Granville United will seek to continue climbing the points ladder when they host free-falling Catherine Hall at the Granville Community Centre.
The Jarrett Park rematch will take the spotlight, however, as Reggae Youths will hope to bounce back from Sunday’s loss, while Faulkland FC are seeking to establish their dominance in the league.
Sunday’s score could be even more lopsided had the Faulkland FC team made use of the chances they created, and today’s game could give them the chance to make up for their mistakes on Sunday.
Reggae Youths have a lot of making up to do as Sunday’s game was the first in which they failed to score this season, losing for the second time in three games.
They will also be hoping to avoid another third-round slump as after winning the mid-season final last season, coming from two goals down to hammer eventual champions Sandals South Coast 5-2, they failed to make it to the semi-finals.
Wadadah FC are the only team in the league yet to lose a game and are three points behind the leaders, and they could jump into joint second place with a win, but that would depend on the result of the game between Faulkland FC and Reggae Youths.
Montego Bay Boys Club are well off the form that saw them advance to the final last year and have earned just two points from their last two games. They are in the relegation zone in ninth place on eight points from 10 games played.
After a good start, Beaches Negril slumped in the second round and are in eighth place, earning two points from their last four games. They have not scored in their last two games, but they should beat Roaring River in today’s game.
Roaring River have conceded 21 goals, second-worst of all teams in the league, but Beaches Negril have managed just nine goals, second to last.
The Hanover derby between Hopewell United and Grand Palladium should be an interesting game between teams separated by just two points with Grand Palladium on 16 points. Hopewell United have not won in their last two games.
Granville United are coming off a 3-1 win over Grand Palladium, their first win all season, and will hope their momentum will carry over against a Catherine Hall team that have not won in their last six games.
