Twiggi adds flavour to Bee Gees’ classic
Just about everybody was singing The Bee Gees’ Too Much Heaven in the summer of 1978. Marie Gittens was a toddler at the time, but grew to love the piercing ballad as an adult.
Recently, Gittens (better known as singer Twiggi) covered Too Much Heaven. Her reggae version is produced by Peter Gracey for his 352 label.
“The idea to cover the song came from the producer himself who approached me about a year ago to put my spin on it,” she told the Jamaica Observer. “I remember growing up hearing it playing on the radio and always loved it but I never got most of the lyrics right until I had to record it.”
Twiggi’s Too Much Heaven came out in February, almost 40 years since the brothers Gibb (Barry, Robin and Maurice) wrote the song and pledged all proceeds from it to the Music For UNICEF Fund in 1979.
The Bee Gees were at their creative and commercial peak at the time, and Too Much Heaven became one of their biggest hits.
Known for their distinctive falsettos, The Bee Gees were a hit with harmony singers such as Twiggi who started her career backing artistes such as Tinga Stewart. Later, she became a member of producer Donovan Germain’s Penthouse Studio where she worked on a number hit songs by Buju Banton and Wayne Wonder.
As a solo act, she had hits like I Want Your Love, produced by Germain. In recent years, she has enjoyed North American chart action with With You I Am Born Again alongside singer/producer Sadiki.
