The fisherfolk at Old Harbour Bay fishing Village were eager to inform Thursday Food of the shortage of fish. “Me nuh know. Is like the fish dem gone in hiding,” said fisherman Dwayne Gallimore, who had just returned from sea with an unimpressive haul. “It’s not productive to be out at sea, spend at least $7,000 on gas for the boat, only for a few fish to sell,” another fisherman stated.

Horlando Henry, who has been fishing in excess of two decades and who goes to sea three to four times per week, travels to Red Light some 25-30 miles away. He was eager to add his bit. “Everybody might raise dem price but my price nuh change. From $350 to $400 you can get grunt and jackfish.”

We also meet Joseph Knight, who in addition to keeping the fishing village clean, also cleans fish. This he has been doing for more than 20 years. “Ask anybody… Me a de original top cleaner and me keep the place clean.” He charges $50 a pound for his fish. Lamenting the slow sales, Knight, like the other vendors, is nevertheless hopeful that sales will pick up as as Easter gets closer.
