ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Traffic will once again be regulated by signals at the intersection of the Santa Cruz By-pass and Main Street in St Elizabeth when newly-upgraded traffic signals are put back into operation at the location tomorrow.

According to Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw, the commissioning, which is scheduled for 10:00 am is coming three months after work began on repairing damaged underground signal cables and ducts at the intersection in December last year.

Shaw said as part of the works the opportunity was taken to upgrade the overall traffic signal apparatus with the installation of new mast arm poles, pedestrian indicators and vehicle sensors.

He explained that the vehicle sensors are intended for efficient traffic management as traffic flow on Main Street will only be interrupted if vehicles are waiting on the minor streets to enter the main thoroughfare. He added that this is the main aim of the NWA’s ongoing $44 million programme to improve traffic management island-wide.

The agency has previously upgraded the Penwood/Spanish Town Road traffic signals in St Andrew, the Spanish Town link road in St Catherine and the Salt River/Free Town Road intersection in Clarendon with new traffic signals to be commissioned shortly at Job Lane/Brunswick Avenue and Feather Bed Lane in Spanish Town.
