Site of new Parliament Building
Dear Editor,
Now that the location of the proposed new parliament building is to be the Heroes’ Circle, I propose that it not be in the park, but between Orange Street (West Heroes’ Circle) and Torrington Road and Torrington Ave.
Among the benefits would be that:
1. Even if the price of purchasing the lots is more than $500 million, the land preserved in National Heroes’ Park is priceless. We may not think so now, but we will when the new Parliament and the developed park are opened.
2. The development should include a multi-storey car park with in and out points from Orange Street. Please, no more parking vehicles within National Heroes’ Park.
3. Access to the new Parliament can be from two major roads, also access to sewerage, water and electricity is better from Orange Street.
5. Construction and the annual opening of Parliament and other State occasions, as well as new traffic to and from Parliament will not disrupt Marescaux Road or East Heroes’ Circle.
6. The public will be able to view functions at the front of Parliament from within the park across the road.
