Continue to expect talent-rich NCB Intercollegiate Champs — Francis
Fans and participants can expect a talent-rich and well-run 2018 NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field and Cheerleading Championships, says Paul Francis, the event’s lead organiser and renowned track and field coach.
“Each year the Intercol Track and Field and Cheerleading Championships keep churning out someone new or a couple of new persons that Jamaica can be extremely proud of,” he said during yesterday’s launch at NCB Wellness and Recreation Centre.
“I think we have done quite well in how we have executed the meet — in a timely manner, in a fair manner… and everybody is happy with how it’s being run,” he added while reiterating expectation of “quality action”.
Francis said emphasis will be placed on field events to ensure that spectators are able to follow as easily as they would action on the track.
The two-day event is set to be held on April 6 and 7 at the National Stadium.
G C Foster College are defending champions of the track and field section, while Caribbean Maritime University, formerly Caribbean Maritime Institute, are the title-holders in cheerleading.
Tissana Hickling, the former St Jago High long jump standout who represents G C Foster, says they are prepared to retain their title.
“Of course! Sure, we will,” she told journalists yesterday.
“Majority of the athletes are going to Commonwealth Games [in April], but others are coming out in full force so we’re looking at a great team,” Hickling assured.
Karen Young, NCB branch manager at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, was pleased her company was able to match its $3-million sponsorship from last year.
“It is this sheer admiration for athletes and their unmatched talents that has propelled NCB to once again come on board as title sponsor.
“This promises to be another year when talent shines on the track and in the field. Almost 1,000 athletes and cheerleaders from tertiary institutions across Jamaica will line up at the National Stadium and vie for places on the medal podium,” said Young.
