#No Commission Art Wednesdays!
The exhibition series Art Wednesdays had its second showing this week inside the Melhado Room of Opa Greek Restaurant & Reggae Mill Bar. Under the spotlight this time around was visual artist and photographer Craig Phang Sang.
“I wanted to show Jamaica a completely different take on photography,” he shared. “What I’ve done started out as photography but has evolved with my additions to and after the photographs. There’s a great cross-section of what I do, especially in the techniques and sizing. A lot of the pieces on display this evening are unusually large — larger than what you’d expect at art shows.”
Beauty is also a crucial aspect of his work, always present and represented through a variety of subjects, “regardless of how outrageous it may seem to people”, in addition to the activation of sensory stimulation.
His art exhibition aside, Phang Sang sees the #NoCommission Art Wednesdays replication in Jamaica as a positive move and is hopeful that younger artists will derive support from it.
“So many of them are spending on pens, pencils, paints and pads and not making any money. So, if they can get something from the sale of their pieces it can help them finance future work, and the thing is, in order for them to sell they need to have a body of work to mount their own exhibitions,” Phang Sang said.
Phang Sang’s pieces will be on display inside the Melhado Room of Opa, Devon House until the next guest artist takes over in two weeks.
