CATHERINE HALL, St James — Sixteen records were broken and two equalled at Saturday’s third staging of the Council of Community College of Jamaica’s (CCCJ) Track and Field and Cheerleading Championships, held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, as Knox Community College dethroned two-time champions Exed Community College.

Despite only six of the 10 schools showing up the event still lived up to expectations, with a number of outstanding performances led by Knox CC’s Delano Bailey and Jovan Smith who broke two records each. The College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) pair of Safiya Clennon and Anniesha Walker both won three individual events each.

Knox scored 285.5 points to take the overall title ahead of outgoing champions Exed CC (213), third were Montego Bay CC (200.5), followed by CASE (166), Brown’s Town (154), and newcomers Trench Town CC (16 points).

MoBay CC won the women’s section with 138 points, ahead of CASE (119), Knox CC (101), followed by Brown’s Town (71), Exed (59) and Trench Town (10.

Knox CC won the male section with 184.5 points, almost 30 points ahead of second-place Exed CC (154), Brown’s Town (85), MoBay CC (63.5), CASE (54) and Trench Town-(15).

Bailey of Knox CC won the men’s sprint double, both races in new records, while MoBay CC’s Hodecia Housen won the women’s section in the best-ever performance by either team at the young championships.

Bailey clocked 10.91 seconds to win the 100m, beating the old record of 10.99 seconds set last year by Nicholas Hewitt of Moneague ahead of his teammate Kenardo Johnson (10.98 seconds) and CASE’s Decoy Royal (11.14 seconds).

Both Bailey (21.79 seconds) and Johnson (21.80 seconds) were under the 200m record of 22.26 seconds, set also by Hewitt. CASE’s Christopher Myrie was third in 22.34 seconds.

Housen, who won the 100m in 12.88 seconds, broke the 200m record in the preliminaries when she ran 26.11 seconds then won the final in 26.1 seconds.

Knox CC’s Jovan Smith successfully defended his shot put and javelin titles while extending his records. He threw 12.73m for the shot put, beating the 12.02m he set last year after he had retained the javelin record with 48.48m past the 45.02m he set last year.

Walker, who also won the gold medal in the 1500m and 300m, set a new record in the 800m when she ran 2:39.02 minutes, under the 2:42.55 seconds set last year.

Clennon, who won the 400m, set a new record in the high jump when she cleared 1.60m to beat the 1.50m set last year by Exed CC’s Tamoya Walters ,and just missed a second record set by Walters when she managed 4.99m in the long jump, just shy of the 5.00m mark set last year.
