Rasta’s Seasoning Hand
Rasta, or Mongoose as he is affectionately called, can be found on the corner of Strand and Church streets in Montego Bay on Fridays and Saturdays with seafood fare. He stands out as he serves up seafood whilst among pot roast pork, jerk chicken neck, jerk chicken and pork, hotdog and egg sandwich vendors in the bustling city square.
For several years Montegonians have come to depend on him for quick seafood treats readily available within the city centre as the only other options are more established eateries on the outskirts of town or on the waterfront.
His menu includes conch, fried fish, ackee and fish, escoveitch fish and of course, the crowd favourite: foil steam roast fish with his special coconut sauce. He is only willing to divulge that the sauce has coconut, but will not share the other ingredients. When pressed by us for the others, a friend of his chimes in, “The Colonel doesn’t share his 11 herbs and spices, so why should he?”
