Prisoner escapes, Commissioner orders review of procedures
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson has ordered the immediate review of all policies dealing with the safe custody and escort of prisoners in police custody, following the escape of a prisoner from the police at the Yallahs Parish Court today.
On the run is 19-year-old Romario Dawes who was charged for various offences to include illegal possession of firearm and burglary.
Reports are that about 12:45 pm Dawes was being escorted from the court room to the holding area when he reportedly attacked a policeman escorting him, knocking him to the ground and made his escape. A manhunt has since been launched for his recapture.
The commissioner has stated that such escapes are unacceptable and undermine the efforts of lawmen who work tirelessly to arrest people accused of serious crimes.
He further stated that any such incident will be dealt with in the strongest manner, holding individuals responsible where breaches of force policies are detected
The Inspectorate of Constabulary has since launched an investigation into the matter.
