UTech Classic takes place this afternoon
All is set for another explosive four and a half hours of action at the 10th staging of the University of Technology (UTech) Track and Field Classic, which gets under way today at 4:00 pm.
The meet once again promises a number of exciting showdowns, with a number of the country’s senior and junior athletes from top local clubs MVP, Racers, Sprintec, Cameron Blazers and Akan scheduled to converge inside National Stadium.
Among the over 200 athletes down to compete will be those from the prep and primary schools who will contest a mixed 4×100 metres relay.
Another highlight will see the high school teams getting a further crack at each other a few weeks after the Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, as they continue their build-up to the exciting Penn Relays to be held from April 26-28, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This coincides with the organisers’ efforts to blend a wide cross section of the nation’s athletics, which is crucial for the development chain. As such, any athlete who has achieved the standard required for the meet will participate.
Meanwhile, among the over 30 events to be contested are the 100m masters, college, open and para men; 200m open; 400m college, open and para; 800m open; 100m and 110m hurdles open; 400m hurdles open; men’s 1,500m open; 4x100m relays and the 4x400m relays.
The shot put, discus, javelin, long jump and high jump open are the field events to be contested.
All events are finals and where there is more than one heat, the event will be treated as a time final.
A cheerleading showdown should also provide added entertainment.
Only the grandstand of National Stadium will be opened, with the admission fee being $1,000, while students with identification cards will pay $700. Tickets will be available today after 9:00 am at the National Stadium.
