RSPL final: Portmore United 2017/18 champions
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Goalkeeper Kemar Foster came up big as Portmore United were crowned champions of the 2017/18 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), following a 4-3 win on penalty over Waterhouse FC in an entertaining finale at the National Stadium in Kingston a short while ago.
After playing out a goalless stalemate in full and extra time, it took the dreaded penalty kicks to decide the outcome and Portmore United held their nerves best to clinch the coveted title.
It was the sixth national title win for Portmore United and first for former Reggae Boyz defender turned coach Shavar Thomas.
Portmore United’s other titles were in 1993, 2003, 2005, 2008, and 2012.
Foster denied both Kemar Beckford and Carlos Barrett from the 12-yard spot to ensure his team victory after the converted all their kicks through captain Ewan Grandson, Roberto Johnson, Damono Solomon and Jeremie Lynch.
Cordel Benbow, Allan Ottey and Tremaine Stewart converted for the Donovan Duckie-coached Waterhouse who had a remarkable run from just above relegation into their first final since the 2013/14 season when they lost to Montego Bay United.
