RACING NEWS…RACING NEWS…RACING NEWS…
Miss Elaine (Phillip Parchment) was declared the winner of Saturday's eighth race after the (Photos: Naphtali Junior)disqualification of Alexandra.

RACING NEWS…RACING NEWS…RACING NEWS…

MISS ELAINE’S WIN — A STRANGE QUIRK OF FATE

The first time three-year-old bay filly got by the winning post in front was April 14.

Then ridden by Phillip Parchment, Miss Elaine trained by Dennis Pryce was disqualified for causing interference to then second past the post Glitter Running, with the latter being declared as the winner.

Move now to last Saturday, April 28, 2018, and Miss Elaine again with Parchment aboard was trounced by the fleet-footed Alexandra ridden by Dick Cardenas and trained by Ian Parsard by three and a half lengths.

Then the stewards’ inquiry sign went up quickly followed by a jockey’s objection filed by Parchment.

After the usual lengthy deliberation by the stewards, Alexandra’s number was taken down and Miss Elaine declared as the winner. A truly weird occurrence but it happens in racing.

ZUGULU MAKES IT TWO-IN-A-ROW IN GROOMS’ TROPHY

After scoring a half-length win in a native-bred five-year-old and upward non-winners of three event on last, Zugulu duly made it two-wins-in-a-row when he romped home easily in the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy feature on Saturday.

The trophy race was contested over five furlongs (1,000m) straight.

Ridden by Dick Cardenas for trainer Norman Smith, Zugulu, turned the last half of the race in a possession, cruising home by six-and-a-half lengths in a good time of 1:00.3 at odds of 2-1.

Diferentgeneration (Robert Halledeen) was second and Paintthistownred (Dane Dawkins) third.

QUEEN OF BAGDAD FINALLY GETS IT RIGHT

Five-year-old chestnut mare Queen Of Bagdad after promising much finally got all the component parts right on Saturday when, under the superb guidance of returning jockey Gary Richards, Queen Of Bagdad defeated her nine rivals by close to four lengths.

Racing in a claiming race and a five-year-old and up non-winners of four, Queen Of Bagdad was asked to hug the rails in the seven-furlong (1,400m) event by Richards.

Still on the inside rails, Queen Of Bagdad got a clear run turning for home and ran away to beat Hologram Shadow (Dane Dawkins), while Newton’s First Law (Melissa Ward) ended in third slot.

Punters who have been supporting Queen Of Bagdad over a long period of time were rewarded with an 11-1 win payout. Queen Of Bagdad is trained by Wayne DaCosta.

TEN HORSES CLAIMED ON SATURDAY

The claiming box was busy on Saturday as a total of 10 horses were claimed on the 10-race programme.

Coded Secret, who won the fifth race, was claimed from Alford Brown by Gary Griffiths for himself for $180,000.

Marlon Anderson claimed Earth Angel for owner Z28 from Dwight Chen; Alford Brown claimed Goodbloodbadblood for owner Barsher from Gordon Lewis; Steven Todd claimed DiferentGeneration for himself from Heaton Thomas; Rudolph Hardial took Action Man for owner Rupert Edwards from Lance Richards and Donovan Russell claimed Zugulu for himself from Norman Smith from the sixth race.

All these claims went for $250,000. In the ninth race, Junior Small claimed Brave Prospect for himself from Leroy Tomlinson; Anthony Nunes claimed Danos La Paz for owner Stephan Narinesingh from Rowan Mathie; Neville Cooper claimed Cup O’ Tea for owner O’Shaun Connection from Prince McDonald and Gresford Smith claimed Meet Justin for himself from Gary Crawford. All horses were claimed for $450,000.
