Senate gives nod for extension of SOE in St James
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Senate today gave its nod to the Emergency Powers (Continuance) Resolution 2018, extending the current state of public emergency (SOE) in St James by another 90 days.
The decision by the Senate follows that of last night’s passage in the House of Representatives which will extend the SOE to August 2, 2018.
Of the 21 members of the Senate, 16 voted in favour while five were absent.
The anti-crime measure was introduced on January 18 under a proclamation issued by the governor general and then extended after the first 14 days, as required by the constitution.
