Portmore, Arnett seek regional glory on home soil
Reigning Red Stripe Premier League champions Portmore United FC and last year’s winners Arnett Gardens FC will co-host the semi-final and final of the FLOW CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championships at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex beginning next week Friday and to conclude the Sunday after.
It is the first time that two teams from the same country has reached this far in the competition and both local clubs were in bullish mood at the launch of the tournament at the offices of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) on Tuesday.
It is the first time in more than two decades that the final round will be held in Jamaica.
Portmore United will tackle Club Atletico Pantoja of the Dominican Republic in the first game starting at 6:00 pm, while Arnett Gardens will go up against Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago in the feature game at 9:00 pm.
The winners of both games will play in the final at the same venue on Sunday starting at 8:00 pm, while the losers will play in the third-place game starting at 5:00 pm. The winners of the FLOW CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championships gets an automatic berth to the 2019 CONCACAF Scotiabank Champions League.
The runners-up of the Caribbean Club Championships will move into the CONCACAF League which starts in August along with the third-place team. The fourth-placed team will face off against Club Franciscain, the winner of the Caribbean Shield in a play-off on May 16, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, also for a chance to play in the Caribbean Club Championship.
Vice-president of marketing and television at FLOW Carlo Redwood was pleased to announce that viewers across the region would be able to view the games live.
“We are indeed very happy with this agreement with CONCACAF that includes a multi-year deal for broadcast rights of multiple confederation championships. At the core of the deal, we have secured the English language rights across our Caribbean footprint in more than 25 countries.
“FLOW customers all across the region will be able to view these games on our FLOW TV network, FLOW Sports 1, but also via our FLOW Sports app. The app allows all of our mobile customers access to watch the games on their mobile via data and free on WiFi,” said Redwood.
