Momma’s boy
British rapper Konan of hip hop duo Krept & Konan, son of reggae great Delroy Wilson, will open the Crepes & Cones restaurant in Croydon, south London, this weekend.
The eatery is a joint venture with Krept.
In a post on Instagram, Konan said a special person inspired him to get involved in the food industry.
“All the stress I put my mum through growing up, all I ever wanted to do is make her proud of me. I remember I told her on the phone before we even found the building, ‘don’t worry I’m gonna make sure you don’t have to work for these people anymore’, and now we’re here,” he wrote.
His mother, Donna Michael is from Jamaica.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, Konan (given name Karl Wilson) said there are big plans for Crepes & Cones.
“Making it a franchise is our goal, but we’re gonna focus on making this one as big as possible.”
Konan disclosed that his mother will be one of the managers of the facility because, “I feel like it is important to have family involved, especially your mum, because she always has your best interest at heart.”
He first toyed with the idea of opening a restaurant four years ago, but it was not until 2016 that he and his team identified an appropriate location, building and feasible budget.
Konan was five years old when his father died in 1995 at the age of 46 from cirrhosis of the liver.
“One of the best feelings was when I was about 14 while in Kingston and people kept coming up to me and saying, ‘You look like Delroy Wilson. Are you his son?,’” he recalled. “I always knew my dad was famous because of family members and hearing his songs on radio. Going to family functions and christenings, he was always getting played.”
Delroy Wilson is one of the most influential singers in reggae. A prodigy at Studio One, he had a number of hit songs including Rain From The Skies, I’m Not A King, Cool Operator and Better Must Come.
Konan spent time in Jamaica in his teens. His mother sent him there to keep him out of trouble.
Krept & Konan formed in 2005. Krept (real name Cayso Johnson) is from Gipsy Hill while Konan is from Thornton Heath. After impacting the British underground scene, in they signed with Virgin EMI Records in 2013.
