ENGLISH 1000 GUINEAS — Billesdon Brook springs 66-1 upset
LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) — Billesdon Brook at 66-1 became the longest priced winner of the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, stunning racing’s big guns but leaving bookmakers laughing all the way to the bank.
Trained by Richard Hannon Jr the rank outsider swept past far better fancied runners under Sean Levey, riding in the race for the first time.
Master Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien saddled the favourite Happily but she was unable to emulate stablemate Saxon Warrior’s win in the 2,000 Guineas 24 hours earlier.
Happily had to settle for third behind runner-up Laurens.
On paper Billesdon Brook had little chance, as reflected by her starting odds, after she trailed in well beaten in her prep.
But with that warm-up under her belt she showed a huge margin of improvement in what Levey summed up as “a massive shock”.
‘I’ve come out and said we could do with a bit of luck, she needs to find 17lb! Where she’s found that from, I don’t know.
“I came there two furlongs out and thought ‘Jesus, I might be going a bit early here’, but I didn’t want to disappoint her.
“I’ve had plenty of winners and have ridden in plenty of races. I’ve always needed a Group 1 — that good horse — and that’s happened today. Fantastic.”
While she was all but ignored before Sunday’s classic that will certainly not be the case the next time she appears, which could be at Royal Ascot in the Coronation Stakes.
