Indie Allen eyes
Indie Allen is chasing his dream of the big time in Canada. The Jamaica-based singer is part of the Canadian television show Club One New Releases which highlights homegrown and Caribbean musicians collaborating on projects.
Allen said this venture has attracted several deals including a Canadian tour which started on April 2. He will also make his debut at the North By Northeast (NXNE) music festival, held annually in June in Toronto.
“I was selected for the Canadian TV show which started our travelling in Trinidad, and we stopped in St John’s and Newfoundland for the second leg of filming and the live show. It was at this live show where I was scouted by the director of operations for NXNE,” Indie Allen told the Jamaica Observer‘s weekly Splash.
He decided to capitalise on this opportunity by staying and performing at any available gigs leading up to the festival which runs from June 8 to 17.
“Being in the business for some time I understand the importance of planning and making calculated moves, and this was one that will benefit the growth of the brand very well.
“NXNE is one of Canada’s largest music festivals and has featured performers such as The Weeknd and Daniel Caesar before they became huge stars,” he said.
Indie Allen, given name Michael Allen, made his musical debut seven years ago when he placed fourth in Digicel Rising Stars. Since then, the Montego Bay native has risen steadily with songs like Cave of Hearts, Lion Pride and Catch A Fire. Indie Allen shared how he has evolved since the competition.
“I would say I have accomplished crafting a unique sound vocally for my brand. I’ve been told by many that they can hear my voice on a track and know it’s Indie Allen and that’s a very huge accomplishment to stand out in a crowded industry. The greatest thing I’ve learnt from that competition is to know exactly what you want and be fearless in going after it,” he said.
While there have been challenges, his passion for music keeps him motivated.
“A career is just like any corporate business that’s new, you’ll be in debt for the start-up of the business until you start making a profit. I don’t think twice about the sacrifices or hardship I face right now, I just keep moving.”
He is looking forward to releasing his next track, I Know You Love Me, in July. The single is produced by Natural High Music.
Indie Allen attended Cornwall College before heading to Kingston to fulfil his music ambitions. He is a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.
