The Content Gardens Police youth club, in a bid to promote health and wellness among residents in Ocho Rios, partnered with two churches the Blood Bought Church of God and the Restoration House to host a health fair in the community, recently.

Scores of residents were able to access free dental and medical care and free HIV testing along with a variety of other services at the event, held at the community sports centre.

President of the Content Garden Police Youth Amanda Thomas said that the health fair was successful because of the partnerships and sponsorship the club received to host the event. She said the club had anticipated approximately 200 people and that over 190 people accessed the services offered.

“It was a great success. It was a successful event and the community supported,” she said.

A very pleased Thomas said the club was also able to host a successful health fair because of the contribution made by many people and organisations.

“I have to give them a big thank you. This is our second time hosting a health fair and this one was better. I also want to thank Corporal Andrew Williams, the assistant island coordinator for the police youth clubs, Ian Isaacs, the councillor,” a grateful Thomas told the Jamaica Observer North & East.

“Thanks to Dr McGregor and company for the hard work that they have done,” she added.

Since it started a few years ago, the Content Gardens Police Youth Club in Ocho Rios, St Ann, has been creating a positive impact in the community. As the club celebrates its 5th anniversary later this year, Thomas said the club is looking forward to doing even greater things in the community.

She said the Club has been contributing to the community and national development in whatever way possible. Members of the club have been participating in a number of charitable events including torch runs to raise money for different projects.

“We do a lot of events with the police; we try to help the children’s ward at the St Ann’s Bay Hospital. We help in the community in any way we can,” Thomas said.

Thomas along with Shanique McKay are also ambassadors for their community. The two participate in a number of workshops geared towards development of youth.

“Over the past week, I have been from workshop to workshop,” Thomas said.

The president of over two years said leading such a vibrant and active youth club is challenging; however with dedication to youth development, it has been successful.

“It has been challenging, but we try to do a lot for the community,” she stated.
