PCJ powers Jamaica invitational with $12-m sponsorship
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) is providing $12 million sponsorship package for the Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIM), which is scheduled for Saturday at the National Stadium.
The PCJ said the allocation is an extension of its support for the well-regarded event for the fifth consecutive year.
The competition, which is an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Challenge Meet, serves as a critical building block for the nation’s athletes, especially those who are based on home soil.
PCJ noted that the meet continually brings internationally renowned track and field stars to Jamaica, giving local athletes the chance to experience elite competition without having to travel overseas.
The line-up for this year’s meet includes double Olympic sprint champion, Elaine Thompson, Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, 2008 Olympic Champion over 400m, LaShawn Merritt of the United States, Jamaican hurdles specialist, Jaheel Hyde and experienced campaigner, Shericka Jackson also of Jamaica.
