All set for St Elizabeth NE delegates’ selection
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) General Secretary Julian Robinson says “it’s all systems go” for Sunday’s delegates’ selection to decide the party’s standard bearer for St Elizabeth North Eastern in the next parliamentary election.
Deputy general secretary of the PNP Basil Waite and former mayor of Black River and councillor for the Balaclava Division Everton Fisher are the candidates up for selection by delegates at the St Elizabeth Technical High School on Sunday.
The selection conference became necessary after current Member of Parliament for St Elizabeth North Eastern and chairman of the PNP’s constituency organisation Evon Redman formally told the party hierarchy he will not be seeking a second term as MP.
Under the Jamaican Constitution, parliamentary elections are due in 2021, though Prime Minister Andrew Holness has the right to send Jamaicans to the polls before then, if he so wishes.
Robinson reconfirmed yesterday that 1,100 delegates are registered as eligible for Sunday’s selection, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am and close at 4:00 pm.
Robinson, who will serve as director of election on Sunday, said the campaign has so far gone smoothly with only one serious complaint involving “inappropriate” use of posters.
“We (party leadership) called both teams in to prevent any recurrence,” he said.
Fisher and Waite were cleared by the PNP’s Integrity Commission and both have signed a Code of Conduct.
