‘The Teacher’ is out Prince Consort Stakes winner,
Prince Consort winner El Profesor will miss the 78th running of the $3-million Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup on May 26 because of an unspecified problem.
Trainer Fitzroy Glispe, a former top-notch jockey, confirmed to The Supreme Racing Guide that his bay gelding by Casual Trick out of the Spacelink mare The Principal is not well, and as a result will bypass the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup.
The Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup, a Grade One event for native-bred three-year-olds, is set for competition over the testing distance of 10 furlongs (2,000m).
“We are going to bypass the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup. I saw something that I really don’t like with him [ El Profesor], but the most important thing is that he is not well enough to run. So, I am going to bypass that race, just being cautious about everything,” Glispie revealed in a trackside interview with The Supreme Racing Guide.
After being gelded earlier this year, El Profesor took a new lease on life and won two consecutive races including the seven-furlong (1,400m) Prince Consort Stakes — the final major prep race before the start of this year’s Classic races.
El Profesor didn’t get his usual good break in the 2000 Guineas, but managed to finish fifth behind winner Commander Two. The bay gelding was seen making some headway in deep stretch, which indicated he would have liked every inch of the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup and would be a dangerous contender.
“Well, he [ El Profesor] performed creditably in the 2000 Guineas due to the fact that he didn’t get a good break and he lost by three lengths in the end. I can’t take anything away from him, but he is not well enough to compete in the Governor’s Cup,” Glispie further informed.
