Mo’ money for Jamaica International Invitational meet
Jamaica’s sole oil refinery, Petrojam Limited, on Thursday continued its support of the Jamaica International Invitational (JII) meet at the official handing over ceremony where the company donated $5 million for the 15th staging of the one-day track meet, scheduled for today at National Stadium.
Faced with financial constraints and limited facilities hampering event organisers’ quest to upgrade the Jamaica International Invitiational meet to Diamond League status, this sponsorship support has seemingly come at the right time and will go a far way in aiding the event to turn some of its objectives into reality.
“Petrojam’s sponsorship of the Jamaica International Invitational meet spans five years, and we have been quite pleased with the results of this partnership which has provided a platform for showcasing many local and international talents,” stated Latoya Pennant, public relations officer, Petrojam Ltd.
“We want to enhance youth and sport development. We want to create a positive experience for athletes, giving them the confidence to take part at a high level and go on to become our next generation of volunteers, coaches, and organisers of sporting events such as these,” she added.
The JAAA has done a remarkable service over the years in promoting national sports development, unearthing and showcasing the talents of athletes — and this year promises to be another successful staging of the event.
The line-up for this year’s meet includes double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson, Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, 2008 Olympic Champion over 400m and Jamaican hurdles specialist, Jaheel Hyde.
