Exporting, importing brown sugar without licence illegal, reminds Sugar Industry Authority
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Sugar Industry Authority is reminding the public that it is against the law to import raw brown sugar into the island or export brown sugar from the island without first obtaining a licence from the authority.
This it said, in an advisory today, is in pursuant to Part II, Section 12(a), (b), 13, 14 and 15 of the Sugar Industry Control Act, as Revised, 1944 which states that: “Any sugar imported, or exported or attempted to be exported, contrary to this provision of this Part may be seized… and shall be forfeited and may be disposed of as the minister may direct.”
It said refined sugar for the retail trade shall be imported for distribution only by the three (3) marketing agents designated by the Sugar Industry Authority under section 6(b) of the Sugar Industry Control Act as agents for the marketing of sugar as stipulated by “The Trade (Prohibition of Importation of Refined Sugar for the Retail Trade) Order, 2017.
The authority further explained that brown and refined sugar for direct consumption should only be sold in heat-sealed packages, pre-packed by re-packers registered by the National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA).
