Guyana man jailed after claiming wife committed suicide
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — A High Court judge has sentenced Vindira Siriram Persaud to 22 years in jail — four years after his wife was found dead in a bucket of water.
Persaud had maintained his innocence during the sentencing phase after claiming during the trial that his wife had committed suicide.
However, the court heard that Shelly-Ann Persaud was badly beaten prior to being submerged into the bucket of water.
The prosecution alleged that he killed his wife between June 9-10, 2014 and he was found guilty of manslaughter by a 12-member mixed jury.
In handing down the sentence, Justice James Bovell-Drakes, said he considered the amount of time the man spent in jail awaiting trial and that fact that he was a well behaved prisoner.
But the judge also warned the convicted man that he should his time in jail to change his conduct.
