KINGSTON, Jamaica — A section of the North/South leg of Highway 2000 from the Mandela Highway in St Catherine to the border of St Ann and St Catherine, was today voted to be renamed “Portia Simpson Miller Highway”, OSBERVER ONLINE has learnt.
It is understood that the resolution to effect this change was put forward by Spanish Town’s Mayor Norman Scott, to honour Simpson Miller who was Jamaica’s first female prime minister at a St Catherine Municipal Corporation meeting.
She served from March 2006 to September 2007 and again from January 2012 to March 2016.
It was also under her tenure that the highway received international investment from the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to be done in three phases and eventually completed in March 2016.
The resolution was approved 14-13.
