Delveland PYC capture Westmoreland FA Major League crown

LLANDILO, Westmoreland — Delveland PYC won their first Westmoreland Football Association Dujon Construction Major League title after beating Golden Touch FC 1-0 in extra time in the final played at Llandilo playfield last Wednesday.

Odal Evans, who came on as a late substitute, scored in the 103rd minute when he tapped in a cross from the left flank, completing a good move by his team.

Golden Touch missed a big chance of at least forcing penalty kicks when Kemoy James’ 107th minute penalty kick was saved by Delveland PYC’s goalkeeper Zavia Daley, who was later named the MVP of the final.

Delveland PYC became the third first-time qualifier for the Western Confederation Super League next season, joining Somerton FC of St James and Falmouth United of Trelawny.

Andre Palmer, the Delveland PYC coach, said winning the title justified their season and, while they had some hitches during the season, winning made it worthwhile.

“It has been an excellent season because we were victorious in the final,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “We can’t complain but we did have some glitches during the season.”

He admitted the standard of play in Wednesday’s final was not at the level he expected. “It was a final and both teams wanted the title badly so you were not going to get beautiful football, but at the end of the day we fought all the way and the players stuck to the game plan.”

Very few chances were created in the first half but Golden Touch were unlucky when a shot beat Delveland PYC’s goalkeeper Zavia Daley early in the game, but the ball hit the base of the post and rebounded into his hands.

Golden Touch had another good chance in the 51st minute, after Daley missed a high ball in his six-yard box, but Obrien Warren wasted the opportunity.

Delveland PYC had their first real scoring chance in the 59th minute when Kesmore Rattray got by two defenders on the right side and despite having all the time he needed, shot the ball high over the cross bar with only goalkeeper Lennox Lewis to beat.

Golden Touch FC came within inches of lifting the trophy, but Timolly Palmer hit the base of the left upright in the 86th minute after he got past Daley and had the entire goal to aim at.

Palmer came close again in the first period of extra time but his header was well saved by Daley, who went low to his right and palmed the ball away, inches from the line.

Evans, who was brought on early in the first period of extra time, was well placed in the 103rd minute to tap home a cross after a good build-up on the left saw goalkeeper Lewis stranded on the edge of his box and left his goal unprotected.

Golden Touch should have levelled the scores in the 107th minute but Daley came up big, saving a weak penalty kick from Kemoy James.
