TAMPERE, Finland — American-born Chantz Sawyers dreams of being one of the new edition of Jamaican quarter-milers who will take Jamaican back to the top in the world, and even surpass the United States who have ruled the roost for a while.

Born in North Carolina but with strong roots in Hanover, where he says he has visited regularly with his family long before he made his debut for Jamaica last year, Sawyers will join Christopher Taylor in the men’s 400m at the IAAF World Championships, but says his dreams are more than just being successful in Tampere, Finland, this week.

Sawyers won the Junior section of the JAAA National Championships three weeks ago, while Taylor was setting a new National Junior Record 44.88 seconds while winning the Senior section, and they hope to be part of a 4x400m team that could be the second team to win since 2000 in Chile.

With Anthony Carpenter — who won a medal in the 4x400m two years ago, Deshawn Morris — who has a 45.09 seconds personal best set this year, Maleik Smith and Shemar Chambers, all available to choose from, there is depth in the team.

“We can beat the USA,.That would be huge and I am really excited to be able to have the opportunity, and I am just blessed to be part of that team,” said Sawyers.

The University of Florida student also has individual ambitions and said he is ready to stake his claim as one of the best in the world at this level.

“I feel what sets me apart from the others is that I have done this all season, and I am not worn out. I feel that I have a little more in me and that I can do well at this meet,” he told the Jamaica Observer earlier in the week.

“My coaches know what they are doing and organised my meets that I will stay fresh for this meet — this was a target all season,” he aaaded.

Sawyers said he wanted to prove that he can not only keep up with the others, but that he can also run fast and get on the medal podium.
