Grizzle honoured by Hanover Rotarians
POINT, Hanover – Well-known hotelier and president of the Negril Chamber of Commerce, Daniel Grizzle, was recently recognised as one of the co-founders of the Rotary Club of Lucea, which was established some 44 years ago.
Grizzle, the owner of Charela Inn Hotel in Negril, is one of 23 surviving members who started the club in 1974, at a time when women were not allowed to become members. The service club, of which the Lucea chapter is one of 29 across the island, started accepting women some 15 years later.
“I want to commend the Lucea club for its longevity. Mr Grizzle is here tonight, one of the founding members. Hail to you, Sir. You have stayed the course. But, 44 years is still young. You have many, many years to go. Many more breadfruit seasons,” said former Prime Minister PJ Patterson, in a toast to Grizzle.
Patterson was the keynote speaker at the Rotary Club of Lucea 44th annual presidential installation dinner at the Grand Palladium Hotel in Hanover recently.
During the ceremony, retired educator, Nerris Hawthorne, was installed as president by assistant district governor Kevin Hammond. She takes over from Neville Anderson.
Among the programmes the new president intends to work on, are a swimming programme, a mentorship programme and the introduction of what will be called ‘Hanover Day.
“Hanover Day will be a long term project and an annual event for Hanover where I will work with the schools, SDC (Social Development Commission), JCDC (Jamaica Cultural Development Commission) and bring our talent, food, culture, everything in one place, on one day,” explained Hawthorne.
“I think it is going to be awesome when we get it through, and it might not necessarily happen within nine months, it could even take one year for us to do the first one. But, we will be doing a lot of planning towards that during this year.”
Apart from those new projects, Hawthorne is expected to continue her predecessor’s projects, which includes an eye care initiative, dubbed ‘See Better, Learn Better,’ and a dental care programme.
