ONLINE READERS COMMENT: Teach the police the road code
Dear editor,
Last week I was driving towards Liguanea from Mona Road (in St Andrew). As I approached the intersection at Waterfalls there was no oncoming traffic on the lane I was entering. There was, however, a police car in the second lane on the other side of the road. I proceeded through the intersection and drove down towards the US Embassy only to be pulled over by the police.
At first the policeman asked why I did not stop at the intersection. I advised that there was no stop sign, unbroken white line or even broken white line. He then asked if I had seen the Yield sign and why didn’t I yield on his approach. Why yield? He was in a different lane on the other side of the road. This highlights how ignorant our police are of the laws they are supposed to uphold.
They are quick to harass decent looking citizens for the slightest infraction and pull them over with flashing blue lights like criminals. But ask them to take on gunmen and taxi drivers who make a third lane at every major intersection across Kingston and they’re missing in action.
I will pay the fine with a heavy heart because I know if I go to court the policeman will not turn up. I do, however, have his name and badge number. I can be contacted by email should his supervisor want to arrange the requisite training he obviously needs.
