Two cops from St Andrew South on corruption charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two police constables assigned to the St Andrew South Division have been charged with breaches of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2000 following accusations that they solicited money from a motorist for the return of his motor vehicle documents.
The two, Shemoy Brooks and Theodore Blake, reportedly contacted the complainant on Tuesday, June 26 and solicited money.
According to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), the constables met the motorist on Thursday, June 28 during which they were offered $3,000 which was refused. It is further reported that the three subsequently agreed on the sum of $8,000 and a date and time was set for the money to be handed over.
The matter was reported and “a covert operation conducted, during which Brooks was seen collecting the $8,000 from the complainant on Friday June 29, 2018,” said MOCA.
He was later arrested, charged and brought before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, July 5, when he was offered bail in the sum of $350,000 with surety and travel restrictions.
Blake was later arrested and placed on an identification parade where he was positively identified on Monday, resulting in him being charged.
He is to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday July 18, 2018.
