KINGSTON, Jamaica — Western Parks and Markets (WPM) Waste Management Limited has apologised to the residents of Granville, Pitfour, Estuary, Retirement, Westgate Hills, Bogue Village and its environs k n St James who have been affected by the smoke resulting from the fire at the Retirement Disposal Site.

In recent days there have been complaints of air pollution by several members of communities surrounding the disposal site following a smoke nuisance which emanated from a major fire that started at the dump on July 14.

The blaze has since been brought under control by the authorities.

The WPM, in a release today, said it is projected that the remnants of the smoke will dissipate by latest Sunday, July 22

as the company has covered 75 per cent of the affected areas with smoke suppressant materials.

The company explained that it, at first, had difficulty accessing the fire.

 “The area from which the fire emanated was difficult to access initially as it was along the lower peripheral section of the disposal site and so a road had to be constructed around the base (along the periphery) so that the team could access the affected area. Closer inspection revealed that the fire was lit in more than one location,” WPM stated in its release.

“Again, we sincerely apologise for the discomfort that residents are experiencing. We assure you that the agency is doing its utmost to return the Retirement Disposal Site to normalcy in the shortest possible time.”
