Weekly Round-up: Kartel attorney rips into trial judge… Drought conditions worsen… Four cops facing criminal charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Justice Lennox Campbell came under more fire this week for his handling of the murder trial of dancehall star Vybz Kartel (Adidja Palmer) and his co-appellants as the attorneys representing them seek to have a 2014 conviction for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams overturned.
Meanwhile, Attorney Robert Fletcher argued on Wednesday in the Court of Appeal that Justice Campbell made several errors during the trial due to his lack of understanding of the law.
Queen’s Counsel Valerie Neita-Robertson, during her argument the day before accused the trial judge of being biased, speculative, and prejudicial towards her client and his co-accused.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness disclosed he has tasked Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange to examine and review the “no-sleeveless” policy at government facilities.
Also on Tuesday, the National Water Commission urged residents in the Corporate Area to conserve on water as the Hermitage Dam is now below 50 per cent capacity.
In sport, the mother of newly crowned IAAF World Under-20 women’s sprint double champion Briana Williams said on Sunday’s final day of the six-day championships that the decision to represent Jamaica was made by the US-based athlete herself.
