Steel music will permeate the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church in St Andrew on Sunday when the church band celebrates its 15th anniversary. The event, dubbed Timeless, starts at 5:00 pm.

Band leader Margaret Rhoden said guests are in for a treat.

“This concert will showcase the variety of music we can play: classical, church music, reggae, Latin. Somehow, Latin and pan music go together really well,” she told the Jamaica Observer. “So we’re stepping it up a bit and I think it’s going to be a great show; we have something for everybody.”

Rhoden said the event will feature a repertoire that journeys through time.

“The concert title was chosen as we were reflecting on our 15 years. They associate certain things with different anniversaries and the number 15 is associated with time, so we decided on Timeless. We even chose pieces that represent that theme as well, like Time With God, Nice Time and Party Time. But we also have Despacito and Brazil,” she shared.

The only Catholic steel band staged its last concert, Pantastic 10, in 2012 to mark one decade since Stella Maris formed its pan ministry in September 2002. Rhoden mentioned some activities the band has been involved with.

“We’ve been helping other organisations with their concerts, we perform at fund-raisers, we do church work, we’ve done some CDs, and outside of that we take jobs so we can tune the pans. So we’ve been pretty busy, but we’re taking a break and doing this concert.”

Reflecting on the band’s career, Rhoden found it hard to choose one highlight.

“I’d say, overall, just the opportunity to evangelise and take something from the Catholic Church and go into other churches like Anglican, Methodist…and we help with their fundraisers. It’s been a great way to evangelise. One of our purposes is to spread the word and evangelise, and I feel we have accomplished that through our music,” she said.
