Dontae to return to winning ways at expense of Superluminal
Following his loss at this level on last, the Anthony Nunes-conditioned four-year-old bay colt Dontae should now come into his own and lead home rivals in the top-rated Overnight Allowance event at Caymanas Park today.
Installed as the 3-5 favourite on last, Dontae got an indifferent ride from Linton Steadman and finished in fourth place behind Jamai Raja at seven and-a-half furlongs (1,500m) in 1:33.4 minutes.
Dontae is much better than 1:33.4 but appeared to run no race at all; with a change in rider now with Shane Ellis taking over as the pilot, the Fearless Vision offspring could return to winning ways.
The three-year-olds and upward event going over 10 furlongs (2,000m) is positioned as the 10th race on the 11-race card and will go to post at 5:15 pm, with first post at noon.
Prior to that disappointing run, Dontae had finished in second position by two and three quarter lengths behind Houdini’s Magic in the Grade One Viceroy Trophy over nine furlongs (1,800m), in 1:50.4 minutes.
In that same race, Dontae had the first runner-up to Horse of the Year and stable companion, premier stayer Bigdaddykool behind him. If Dontae can produce anything near that form, then it should be a walk in the park for him in this race.
Past Jamaica St Leger winner Superluminal should give Dontae most to do here. Superluminal has been plagued by injuries most of his career but his last run in July, when he finished second by over four lengths to Secret Traveller, is a clear signal that he coming into his own now.
Superluminal loves two turns, and if Dontae puts a foot wrong then look for Superluminal to take up the running and lead home rivals.
Of the others in the nine-horse field, Dysfunctional, Bruce Wayne and Biblical Legend should have a say in the outcome of the race.
Meanwhile the feature event, the 2018 Independence Day Stakes Trophy over a mile (1,600m), should see Strike It Lucky, Also Correct, Dusseldorf and Coded Secret battling out to the finish.
