KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two Surinamese women and a man from French Guiana who were charged under the Proceeds of Crime Act after being found with large sums of cash at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston (NMIA) last month have been convicted.
A report from the Constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) outlined that the three, Ingrid Asatie and Claudia Clijdesdale from Suriname and Delroy Sanduliet of a French Guiana address were nabbed as they attempted to leave the island on a flight for Guyana on Sunday, July 22.
They were reportedly found with US$93,000, Surinamese $325, Euro 150, and J$50 concealed on their bodies.
A portion of the cash amounting to US$81,050 has been forfeited to the crown, according to the report from the CCU.
When they appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday, Asatie and Clijdesdale were fined $100,000 or six months in prison on the charge of possession of criminal property, $50,000 or six months in prison for each count of concealment of criminal property; and facilitating the retention of criminal property.
CCU said Sanduliet in the meantime was fined $100,000 or three months in prison on the charge of attempting to remove criminal property from Jamaica.
