Quite a contest is brewing tomorrow in the Open Allowance – nine furlongs and 25 yards (1820 metres) event involving seven horses, all with enough merit and form to win.

Topping the handicaps with 126 lb (57.0 kgs) is the old warrior, Perfect Neighbour who goes against fellow Derby winner Orpheus, as well as a number of young upstarts simply waiting to be let loose.

The Supreme Racing Guide looks at the chances of the seven runners in this well-anticipated race in post-position order.

ORPHEUS: (5.ch.h – Adore The Gold – La Reina) – His last four races have been sprints (five straight, six furlongs, five straight and 5 ½ furlongs) while his last win on February 28 came over seven and a half furlongs. This is the first time in a while that Orpheus is being given the opportunity of going long and he has every chance to deliver for his connections. That February 28 win saw Orpheus beating Perfect Neighbour by nearly two lengths. Orpheus at five years, is still fit and ready and is going to be hard to deny him especially with the two turns of this race much to his liking.

SECRET TRAVELLER: (4.b.g – Traditional – Sea Traveller) – Has had quite a renewal since the recent change of trainers. Secret Traveller raced on August 1 in Open Allowance for the first time over a distance of 5 ½ furlongs, which is not even close to his best journey. Secret Traveller’s last win in Overnight Allowance came on July 14 over the same trip as tomorrow’s race beating Superluminal who confirmed the form with a good win on Independence Day. Secret Traveller, is young, his trainer is enjoying the form of his life and with the journey much more to his liking, he is given every chance of winning this one.

UNCLE FRANK: (4.dkb.g – Storm Craft – Dusty Mills) – One of the young upstarts seeking to find his place among the better horses around. Uncle Frank has done remarkably well, as he has climbed his way up in the rough and tumble of the various classes to the top level. Uncle Frank first effort among the best was the Eros Trophy (seven furlongs) when he finished way behind, the winner, She’s A Maneater. Now he is among horses he can better manage and is given an outsider’s chance of winning.

DRUMMER BOY: (3.b.c – Natural Selection – Preach Preacher) – Did not shine as expected in the three-year-old Classic races even after winning the prestigious Lotto Classic run for the Governor’s Cup in late May. Now Drummer Boy faces even more daunting foes than his three-year-old peers and as such is not given much of a chance to land this one even with his youth when compared with the others. Drummer Boy has a lot to learn and that learning process starts in this race.

JAMAI RAJA: (5.ch.g – Market Rally – Angela’s Favorite) – It was really nice to see this troublesome but talented horse return to the winners’ enclosure when he last raced over seven and a half furlongs. Jamai Raja promised much at the start of his career but injuries have curtailed his progress for a long while. Now, trainer Delroy Waugh has worked and worked and is now reaping some of the rewards for his loyalty and hard endeavours. With no clear-cut leader in the race, Jamai Raja can go to the front and if left unchecked has enough spunk and fight to last home.

PERFECT NEIGHBOUR: (8.dkb.g – Natural Selection – Desperatehousewife) – One win from seven starts this year makes it a very ordinary season thus far for Perfect Neighbour. Tomorrow he allows weight to all others and although he did show a glimpse of what he is capable of on July 28 in the Eros Trophy (seven furlongs), Perfect Neighbour is really and truly nowhere near his best form and status of old. To win against these he has to put every hoof right and even with the champion jockey in such good form of late, Perfect Neighbour is still going to find it rather difficult to succeed. Yet if he gets it right, look for him to be making his bid in the last furlong and a half of this race.

LIGHTING LILY: (4.b.f – Storm Craft – Rhythm Of My Heart) – This filly has won her two last races, including at the Overnight level on July 18 when she defeated Jamai Raja over six and a half furlongs. Now she tackles Open Allowance and a different set of horses who are seasoned and tough. Lightning Lily is going to be near to the front runners and it will be a case of whether or not she will effectively get the distance as she travels around the two turns but she has a a chance albeit a slim one.
