Desnoes and Geddes donates $1m to boost Riverton Dump security
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government is to get a boost in its effort to secure the Riverton City Landfill with a $1-million donation from Red Stripe, through its Desnoes and Geddes Foundation.
According to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, the funds will be used for the acquisition of video surveillance equipment to improve security at the disposal site.
The donation comes weeks after Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie announced that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force were deployed to the island’s disposal sites as part of a wider security plan being implemented in the wake of recent fires at the locations.
In the past two months, there have been 11 fires at dumps across the island, costing the Government millions of dollars to extinguish.
The most recent fire at the Riverton Dump was on July 29, which resulted in smoke blanketing sections of the Corporate Area and surrounding areas
