HARTFORD, Westmoreland — Minister of National Security, Dr Horace Chang has declared that no stone will be left unturned to bring the killers of Constable Rohan Bucknor to justice, noing that his assailants are barefaced and cavalier.

Dr Chang, who visited the grieving family of the murdered policeman shortly after arriving in the island from an overseas trip on Tuesday, told the relatives that the government is prepared to deploy all the necessary resources to find the killers.

“Anywhere the killers are hiding at this time, I want to warn them that the security forces are coming to get them, and justice will be served”, a distraught Dr Chang promised.

“By all accounts from residents in his community of Hartford and his colleagues, this policeman was hard- working and law-abiding, and he just didn’t deserve to lose his life in this wanton and callous manner.”

The national security minister questioned how will Jennelle (Bucknor’s wife), relate the death of her husband to their one-year-old child, when she grows up.

“This child is now fatherless and a young woman (Jennelle) is also without a husband who was the bread winner in the family,” Dr Chang noted.

He argued that the killing of the cop clearly demonstrates the depth in which the country has sunk, and the wanton disregard that “these thugs” have for life.

“There is a set of young men in the society who are hell-bent on creating mayhem and panic, and have shown scant regard for law and order. but, as minister, I want to let them know that their behaviour will not be tolerated nor embraced by me or the members of the security forces”, Dr Chang said.

Dr Chang then stated that the government will be providing the police in Westmoreland with the necessary resources in a bid to ensure that they do their job effectively.

“We are having some challenges in Westmoreland with criminals; however, I want to assure the public that the security forces will not relent in bringing calm and stability to the parish in short order,” he told the Hartford residents.

Since the start of the year, 89 murders have been recorded in Westmoreland, two fewer than the comparative period last year.

In expressing his condolence to the grieving relatives, Dr Chang said that oftentimes when members of the security forces are killed by criminals, not much attention is given to their family members by the state, and even their own colleagues, hence his visit to the community.

Reports are that shortly after 9:45 Sunday night, Constable Bucknor, who was assigned to the Little London Police Station, was at a barbershop in Petersfield in Westmoreland, when hoodlums pounced on him and shot him several times.

The 41-year-old constable died, leaving his wife Jennelle and three children, including Roann, his one- year- old daughter.

Constable Bucknor’s untimely death was condemned by a wide cross section of the society, including the hierarchy of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and residents.

“We see this as an attack against law and order, and we will be relentless in finding his killers,” Superintendent Gary McKenzie, divisional commander for Westmoreland, told the Jamaica Observer West.

Up to yesterday, McKenzie was unable to provide a motive for the attack on the policeman, whom he described as a “fearless and hard-working crime fighter”.

“He was an experienced, hard-working officer who did his work in a fearless manner. He had a wide range of experience, having served in a number of areas, including the Mobile Reserve, the Patrol Division, and(central Investigation Bureau CIB,” McKenzie revealed.

He noted that investigators are working assiduously to make a breakthrough in the case.

“There is nothing coming up as yet; there is no clear motive, there are no suspects, but we are trying to put the pieces together and trying to get information from anybody who might know anything at all,” said Supt McKenzie, as he urged individuals who might have information to come forward.
