Jamaicans depart for table tennis tourney in Dom Rep
Jamaica’s table tennis teams are set to depart the island today for the annual staging of the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Championships (CRTTC) to be held in the Dominican Republic from August 27 to September 1.
The Jamaicans, who were second when they hosted the championship last year, will be seeking to turn the tables on this year’s hosts, who are the overall defending champions.
Jamaica are expected to defend their Under-13 Girls team title, as well as the Under-11 girls doubles title, when they square off against the likes of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Barbados, Guyana, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and the host nation.
Action will be in the Mini category to be contested by Under-11 boys and girls, while their Under-13 counterparts will do battle in the Pre-Cadet division.
Following the team battles, which will be a best-of-five tie consisting of four singles and a doubles clash, the players will turn their attention to the individual events to include singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
Three Jamaicans — Tsenaye Lewis, Azizi Johnson and Navach Scott — are currently among some of the Caribbean’s best that have been selected to attend a one-week training Hope Camp, also hosted by the Dominican Republic.
The players will also compete in singles competition, with the top two boys and girls qualifying to attend another Hope Camp in Latin America next month.
