O-WRAP: Corporate Area traffic flows smoothly… Earthquake jolts Kingston… Police ‘restive’

1. No major delays in Corporate Area despite traffic changes
Members of the security forces were strategically positioned in sections of the Corporate Area where traffic changes were implemented and expected to be severely affected at the start of the new school year. However, no major delays were observed this morning.
2. Earthquake felt in Kingston and St Andrew
A moderate earthquake was reportedly felt in the parishes of Kingston and St Andrew around 9:35 am today. The epicentre of the 5.2 magnitude quake was offshore Negril, Westmoreland.
3. 14, 700 more persons employed in April
Planning Institute of Jamaica Director General, Dr Wayne Henry, says the number of individuals in jobs increased by 14,700 to 1,217,300 persons, as at April 2018, relative to the corresponding period last year.
4. Motorists vow to leave earlier to beat traffic on Mandela Highway
Motorists expected to beat the highly anticipated traffic congestion this morning; however, there was a pile-up of traffic on Mandela Highway from as early as 5:45. Some motorists vow to leave earlier to beat the congestion coming out of Portmore, St Catherine.
5. PSOJ calls for co-operation will back-to-school traffic measures
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica is urging Jamaicans to play their part in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic’ in the Corporate Area.
6. Police ‘restive’ says federation
The Jamaica Police Federation says rank and file police officers are “very restive” as the Government is “mocking” the wage negotiation process. The federation is demanding that it resumes wage talks no longer than Friday, September 7 and said it is to hold a series of consultations with its members on the way forward in their wage negotiation with the government.
7. St Vincent parliament to debate marijuana legislation
The St Vincent and the Grenadines parliament will meet on Thursday for the first reading of three pieces of legislation as the government continues its efforts to establish a medical marijuana industry in the country.
8. TS Gordon lashes South Florida
Tropical Storm Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds on Monday, forcing holiday beachgoers to drier ground. Weather forecasters said the storm could strengthen to near-hurricane force by the time it hits the central US Gulf Coast.
9. Teachers in Guyana continue strike action as new school term begins
A new school term began in Guyana on Monday with teachers staying away from the classrooms in support of the demands of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) for a 40 per cent salary increase.
10. CPL Update: Patriots beat Tallawahs by seven wickets
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defeated Jamaica Tallawahs by seven wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method, in their rain-affected Caribbean Premier League match at Warner Park here Sunday night.
