Police say Gov’t mocking the wage negotiation process
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Police Federation (JPF) says the Government is mocking the wage negotiation process and is demanding that it continues wage talks no later than Friday, September 7.
The federation today disclosed that it has received correspondence from the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service that Portfolio Minister Dr Nigel Clarke will be unable to accede to its request to continue wage negotiations for the 2017-2019 contract period, a response which the JPF says is unacceptable.
According to the Chairman of the Police Federation Corporal Arleen McBean, the rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force have been experiencing high levels of destitution and indignation because of lackadaisical approach by the Government of Jamaica.
“The proposed value of $122.00 per day on average for four years for the sergeants, corporals and constables is extremely disgraceful and insultive based on the consistent efforts and sacrifices of the rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
“It is inconceivable that the Government of Jamaica, believes that an overworked and underpaid police force portrays prosperity in an uncertain economic environment. This we classify as a mockery encapsulated with lip service and empty promises,” said the federation — which is an independent unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
McBean said “we have worked tirelessly to maintain and ensure that the best approach is always present during these negotiations, however the principles of negotiating in good faith has been consistently ridiculed and disrespected by the Government of Jamaica”.
She highlighted that the hard-working rank and file members are very restive and annoyed at the diminished value placed on our service.
JPF said there will be a series of consultation meetings with rank and file members to hold candid discussions on the way forward.
