Dear Editor,

Teaching and learning can be a win-win situation if all stakeholders not only play their part in September but carry the same spirit of high expectation throughout the academic year.

Having been in the education system for over five years, I have realised that for some parents, expensive bags and shoes are more important than purchasing textbooks and paying auxiliary fees, while other parents are only seen in September and for the other months of the academic year they seem to be missing in action.

Parents, be active in your children’s school life, develop a rapport with the teachers and know their friends. By doing so, your children are guaranteed to win.

Teachers tend to also start the school year on a high with our action plans outlining innovative objectives to incorporate technology and differentiate lessons, some of which do not materialise past the first term. If teachers work collaboratively, prepare adequately for each class, share best practices and innovative ideas, give each other constructive criticisms and decide to go above and beyond for the success of their learners, then both teachers and students will win.

With the partnership of home and school, it is now for students to do their part. Students ought to plan strategically for each day, ensuring that they have read over before going back to the next class and that assignments are completed. It’s imperative that students participate in sports, clubs, and societies or voluntary activities to help in their holistic development.

Students, see rules as guidelines that are preparing you for the professional world and not as imprisonment. With this starter pack, you are sure to win.

With these in mind, I would like to wish all stakeholders in education a winning 2018-2019 academic year.
