International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Diamond trophy winner Fedrick Dacres won his 20th event of the year yesterday and set a new meet record at the IAAF World Challenge event at Sports Park Mladostin in Zagreb, Croatia.

The discus thrower’s effort of 68.18 metres, his second best of the year, was almost a metre better than the old record of 67.25m set in 2012 by Great Britain’s Lawrence Okoye.

Dacres’ compatriot Traves Smikle finished fourth with 63.75m.

There were second-place finishes for sprinter Tyquendo Tracey in the men’s 100m and Stephenie Ann McPherson in the women’s 400m, while Kerron Stewart was fourth in the women’s 100m.

Dacres — having the season of his life with titles from the Commonwealth Games, IAAF World Cup in Athletics and NACAC Senior Championships before winning his first IAAF Diamond trophy last week — has finished outside the top two once in his 16 competitions outside of Jamaica— an eighth-place outing at the Bislet Games in Norway.

Yesterday — he was consistent through the rounds, starting with 64.33m. He fouled his second throw before getting 65.11m on the third, passing the 64.50m by Austria’s Lukas Weisshaidinger who finished second.

Dacres then threw 65.27m, and had another foul before getting the record in the final round.

American Mason Finley was third with 64.21m.

In the men’s 100m Tracey was timed in 10.18 seconds (0.8m/s) as he finished behind American Mike Rodgers (10.08) with Canada’s Aaron Brown third in 10.24.

McPherson ran 51.20 seconds in the 400m, beaten to the line by Diamond trophy winner Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, who ran 50.54. Holland’s Lisanne De Witte was third in 52.30.

Stewart finished off the podium in the women’s 100m as she ran 11.43 seconds (0.5m/s) behind the Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou (11.05), Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye (11.28) and Great Britain’s Daryll Neita (11.33).
